Wheeler Meets with Congressional Delegation and Staff

Heather Wheeler, CTAI Executive Director attended the ACT Leadership Academy in Washington, DC last week. While in DC for the ACT Leadership Academy, Wheeler scheduled meetings with Senators Crapo and Risch and Congressmen Labrador and Simpson to discuss the transportation reauthorization bills. The main purpose of the meetings was to orient the Delegation and their DC legislative staff with CTAI and the work we are doing in Idaho and for their support on the following items in the respective transportation reauthorization bill:

  • Maintaining current funding levels.
  • Strengthened public transportation planning process that would increase local community involvement in service decisions and increase coordination of transportation services.
  • Consolidating several FTA programs to eliminate the silos that have proven to be a significant barrier.
  • Allowing more flexibility in use of the 5307 FTA funds for operating costs.

The day after Heather’s meetings, Senator Crapo’s legislative aide requested she meet with her to review the Transit portion of MAP-21 which was released to Banking Committee members only. Upon review of the bill language, it appears all of the items above are included in the Banking bill. The bill was released for public review this week.
