Idaho Transit Agencies Celebrate 8th Annual National Dump the Pump Day on June 20

For Immediate Release

Dump the Pump.  Save Money.  Ride Transit or RideShare.

(Boise, Idaho)  The Community Transportation Association of Idaho (CTAI) announced today it is partnering with Idaho’spublic transportation systems, and systems nationwide to participate in the eighthannual National Dump the Pump Day on Thursday, June 20.  The slogan of this year’s National Dump the Pump Day is “Dump the Pump.  Save Money. RideTransit.”

Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the 2013 National Dump the Pump Day is a day that encourages people to ride public transportation and save money, instead of driving a car.  Started in June 2006 when gas prices were $3 per gallon, this national day emphasizes that public transportation is a great travel option that also helps people save money.

Since gas prices reached $4 or more this year, saving money is on everyone’s minds and public transportation is the quickest way to beat high gas prices.  According to the latest APTA Transit Savings Report, individuals in a two-person household can save an average of more than $9,700 annually by downsizing to one car.

National Dump the Pump Day also provides an opportunity for Idahoans without access to transit to consider vanpooling or ridesharing as a cost-savings alternative to driving alone every day. Idaho's vanpool programs are provided by Ada County Highway Districts’ Commuteride, City of Moscow, Mountain Rides Transportation Authority, and Bannock Transportation Planning Organization's RIDE-LINK. These programs save money for thousands of riders each day, while removing thousands of vehicles off Idaho's roads. In addition, IdahoRideShare.org an easy-to- use, free, ride matching website helps connect those interested carpooling.

CTAI is proud to partner with and recognize Idaho’s public transportation systems for the role they play in safely transporting Idahoans while saving them money on the more than 3.9 million trips provided. That is more than 75,000 boardings throughout the state on a weekly basis!

A few Dump the Pump events to highlight include:

Wood River Valley: Mountain Rides – Free rides (and giveaways) for the day on all their routes.
Moscow: SMART Transit – Pre-Dump the Pump Day giveaways and prizes.
Lewiston: City of Lewiston – Free giveaways and prizes.

CTAI is dedicated to creating partnerships, improving efficiencies, and building a transportation system that supports all modes of travel. CTAI oversees a variety of programs, such as Idaho RideShare, and works closely with local citizens, transportation providers, and community leaders to improve transportation options throughout the great state of Idaho.
