CTAI Receives Funding for Grassroots Coalition Efforts
Transportation Options for Idaho’s Communities

Boise, Idaho, 11/2/2011 — The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) awarded a $5,000 grant to CTAI, the Community Transportation Association of Idaho, with the goal to build, educate and empower at least 1,000 Idahoans in support of public transportation options and its funding through local option tax authority.

Currently the state of Idaho is one of three states in the nation that does not provide dedicated local and state funding to the public transit system, leaving our public transit providers to rely on federal funding, fares and local contributions. In addition, communities within the state are not allowed to tax themselves to improve their local transit systems unless they are a “resort” community and have a population under 10,000. CTAI, in cooperation with Idaho Smart Growth, is partnering with a small group of community leaders who are working to put the question of local option tax authority on the ballot in November 2012. With potential cuts of over 30% looming at the federal level this initiative will be critical to ensure many of our public transportation systems will be sustainable for years to come.

“Our goal is to energize a grassroots coalition to achieve state and local public transportation goals by utilizing the IM4CTAI initiative,” said Heather Wheeler, CTAI Executive Director. She added that, “the IM4CTAI initiative will identify, grow, and educate Idahoans throughout the state so they can reach out to Idaho Congressman, state legislators, local elected officials, and community business leaders in an effort to improve funding for their local transportation system.”
